Overview

Canada welcomes over 20 million visitors annually and offers two main entry options depending on your nationality: the Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa/TRV) or the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

Citizens of visa-exempt countries (UK, EU, Australia, Japan, and others) need an eTA to fly to Canada — a simple online process costing CAD 7 that is typically approved in minutes. Citizens of visa-required countries (India, China, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, and others) need a Visitor Visa (TRV), which requires a full application through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Key differences from other immigration systems: - All applications are submitted online through the IRCC portal — there are no paper applications or embassy walk-ins for visitor visas - Most visa applicants must provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre (VAC), costing an additional CAD 85 — biometrics are valid for 10 years - Canada uses a "dual intent" policy, meaning that unlike the US, expressing interest in eventually immigrating does not automatically disqualify you from a visitor visa - eTA is NOT required when entering Canada by land or sea from the United States — only for air travel - US citizens do not need either a visa or eTA to enter Canada (passport required)

Travel Tips

  • Apply online through the IRCC portal — there are no paper applications for visitor visas
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are required for most visa applicants at a Visa Application Centre — book this appointment promptly after submitting your online application
  • eTA holders should apply at least 72 hours before their flight, though most approvals come within minutes
  • Processing times vary significantly by country of residence — check IRCC's processing time tool for current estimates specific to your location
  • The border officer determines your length of stay at entry, typically up to 6 months — bring documents supporting your planned departure date
  • Canada has two official languages (English and French) — if applying to visit Quebec, having some French documentation can strengthen your application
  • Avoid third-party eTA websites that charge inflated fees — the official government application costs only CAD 7 at canada.ca/eta
  • If visiting family, a detailed invitation letter from your Canadian host significantly strengthens your application
